The complete guide to hair transplants: FUE, FUT, and what they cost

18 min readUpdated Aug 2026Educational content — not medical advice

A hair transplant moves your own hair from where it grows permanently (usually the back and sides of your head) to where it doesn’t. It’s the only treatment that adds hair rather than slowing loss, and it’s the goal of most campaigns on Hairraiser.

FUE vs. FUT

FUE (follicular unit excision) extracts grafts one at a time, leaving dot scars that disappear under short hair. FUT (the strip method) removes a strip of scalp and yields more grafts per session, at the cost of a linear scar. Most campaigns fund FUE. It’s the standard for a reason, but FUT can make sense for larger sessions.

Typical costs
FUE, 1,500–2,500 grafts (Turkey)$3,500–6,000
FUE, 1,500–2,500 grafts (North America)$8,000–15,000
FUT strip session (North America)$6,000–12,000
Meds + aftercare, first year$500–1,200

Five questions to ask any clinic

Who performs the extractions: the surgeon or technicians? Get it in writing.
How many grafts, and how was that number decided? A quote without an exam is a red flag.
Can I see healed results on patients with my hair type and loss pattern?
What happens if grafts fail? Is there a documented touch-up policy?
What’s the plan for the hair I still have? Transplants don’t stop ongoing loss.
